HOW TO PREVENT TOOTH DECAY

Tooth decay is a major reason people who lack oral hygiene seek dental care. Decay can cause sensitivity, tooth loss, discomfort, problems eating and drinking, and may lead to infections or damage to the teeth and gums. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is the best way to prevent decay from forming.

Decay is caused by plaque that forms due to leftover food in the mouth reacting with acids and saliva. It sticks to teeth and eats away at the enamel, causing small holes that become cavities. Using an ADA-approved toothpaste will protect teeth and remove plaque. Floss teeth at least once a day to get rid of materials between teeth that brushing cannot remove. Flossing is just as important as brushing, so make sure to do it often.

USE MOUTHWASH

Mouthwash rinses out bacteria and reduces the occurrence of plaque. Mouthwash that contains fluoride strengthens teeth and reduces the development of tooth decay. Speak with your dentist about products you are interested in to make sure they will benefit your teeth.

REDUCE SWEETS

The main reason for plaque build-up in the mouth is starch and sugar. Sugar sticks to the back of teeth and turns into plaque that eats the enamel and causes decay and cavities. Brushing and flossing may not remove every bit of leftover material, so it is a good idea to limit or reduce the number of sugary foods and drinks you consume.

Drink water after meals to wash away sugars and other materials. Use straws more often to keep drinks from washing over teeth and leaving residue behind that could turn into plaque. Your teeth can be protected in your home, but make sure to schedule dental appointments biannually to make sure your teeth are in the best shape possible.
