Dental Health and Tooth Fillings

For treating the cavity, the dentist near FL will remove the decayed portion of your tooth and then ‘fill’ the area on the tooth where decayed material was removed. The fillings are also used for repairing cracked or broken teeth and teeth that have been worn down from misuse.

Steps Involved in Filling a Tooth

The dentist will use a local anesthetic for numbing the area around the tooth which needs filling. Next, the drill air abrasion instrument or laser will be used for removing the decayed area. The choice of instrument depends on the individual dentist’s comfort level, training, and investment in a particular piece of equipment along with the location and extent of the decay.

The dentist near 33756 will then determine if the decay has been removed. Once the decay is removed, the dentist will prepare the space for filling by cleaning the cavity of bacteria and debris. If the decay is near the root, the dentist will put a liner made of glass ionomer, composite resin, or other material for protecting the nerve. Usually, after the filling is in, the dentist will finish and polish it.

There may be additional steps needed for tooth-colored fillings. Once the tooth is cleaned and infection is removed, the tooth-colored material is applied in layers. A special light which cures and hardens the layers is applied. When the multi-layering is completed, the dentist shapes the composite material to the desired result and trims off any excess material and polishes the final restoration.

What Types of Filling Materials are Available?

Today, you can find different types of filling material. Your teeth can be filled with gold, porcelain, silver amalgam or tooth-colored composites. You can also find a material that contains glass particles and is known as glass ionomer. It is used in ways which are similar to the use of composite resin fillings.

The location and extent of the decay, cost of filling material and your insurance coverage along with your dentist’s recommendation can help in determining the type of filling that is best for you.
